DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association released its NCAA Division II National Players of the Week awards for the week ending on February 11, 2024. Northeastern State junior first baseman C.D. White is the National Hitter of the Week and Northwest Nazarene senior lefty Jonathan Zayas is the National Pitcher of the Week.
White (Owasso, Okla. / Cowley County CC) recorded a league-high ten hits and 14 RBI last week as the RiverHawks went 4-0. The senior first basemen was just a home run short of the cycle with a 4-of-5 performance in the box with seven RBI against Southern Nazarene in the first game of a doubleheader at home. In the nightcap, White’s first at-bat was a homer while he ended the game with five RBI, going 4-for-4 at the plate. White had a hit in all four games for the RiverHawks and slugged 1.235 at the plate with a .556 on-base percentage.
Zayas (Williamsport, Pa. / Arizona Western College) was nearly untouchable in the Nighthawks’ 4-0 shutout of Stanislaus State, authoring seven brilliant innings to propel the Nighthawks to a win. The left-hander allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out nine batters across 95 pitches. After a 1-2-3 first inning, Zayas walked the leadoff hitter in the second before retiring the next 13 Warriors in order until an error broke the streak. He took a no-hitter into the seventh before it was broken up with one out on Stanislaus’ only hit off Zayas. The second-year Nighthawk matched his NNU career highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts, and it was his first shutout performance in a starting role.
