Givhans, Reistetter and Sill are NCBWA Division III National Players of the Week

DALLAS (NCBWA) – Home runs and going the extra mile for a team on the mound caught the attention of the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association NCAA Div. III Weekly Awards Committee, which announced its honors for games played April 8-14 on Wednesday. Please note there is a second honorable mention Pitcher of the Week due to a voting tie and both honorable mention selections having the same number of first-, second-, and third-place votes.

HITTER OF THE WEEK

Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) senior outfielder Clarence Givhans slashed .667/.789/1.750 on the week. He went 8-for-12 at the dish with nine RBI, six walks, six runs scored, four home runs, three stolen bases, and a double in four games for the Trailblazers. He went 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run, two RBI, two walks, and two stolen bases in a 5-4 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The outfielder went 4-for-4 with five RBI, four runs scored, two home runs, and a walk in a game against Framingham State University (Massachusetts). Givhans was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week and was the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Player of the Week.

Honorable Mention Hitter: Will Granata, So., OF, University of Mount Saint Vincent (UMSV) (New York) – Dazzled at the plate for the Dolphins, who went 4-1 during the week with a sweep over then-Skyline-unbeaten State University of New York Maritime College. Went 13-for-23 (.565) with 15 RBI, nine runs scored, and five home runs over the five games. One of Granata’s five homers was a walk-off solo shot against Maritime. Granata was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week and was the Skyline Player of the Week.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK

United States Merchant Marine Academy (New York) senior Tyler Reistetter pitched 11 innings of his team’s 13-inning, 2-1 victory over State University of New York at Purchase on Sunday. Reistetter struck out 17 batters in the game, yielded one unearned run on six hits, and threw 181 pitches in the start. The 17 strikeouts are tied for the second-most in a NCAA Div. III game this spring. The left-hander maintained a Skyline Conference-leading 0.83 ERA on the season. Reistetter earned his fifth Skyline Pitcher of the Week award.

Honorable Mention Pitchers: Chris Suter, Jr., Union College (New York) – Was stellar in his two outings last week on the mound. Was lights out in a complete-game shutout effort against St. Lawrence University (New York) on Sunday, allowing one hit with four strikeouts in eight innings of a run-ahead rule 14-0 win. Suter worked a scoreless inning of relief in Wednesday’s 15-5 win over Williams College (Massachusetts). Suter was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week and was the Liberty League Pitcher of the Week. Zachary Simone, Gr., Lasell University (Massachusetts) – Tossed a seven-inning, complete-game one-hitter on Saturday as Lasell shut out Anna Maria College (Massachusetts) 17-0. Simone was perfect except for a double in the fourth inning. Simone set down 21 of the 22 batters he faced and struck out seven. Simone was named to D3baseball.com’s Team of the Week and was the Great Northeast Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Week.

ROOKIE OF THE WEEK

State University of New York at Old Westbury first-year designated hitter James Sill helped his team collect three Skyline wins. Sill went 10-for-18 (.556) at the plate over four games against UMSV and Mount Saint Mary College (New York) with 12 RBI, nine runs scored, and five home runs. Sill broke the first-year program record for most home runs with nine. He was 5-for-9 with seven RBI, five runs scored, and three home runs in Sunday’s doubleheader with Mount St. Mary and went 4-for-9 with five RBI, four runs scored, and two homers the day before in a twin bill with UMSV. Sill was named the Skyline Conference Rookie of the Week.

Members receive a membership card, directory, newsletter updates, and official votes in the Dick Howser Player of the Year Award, Regional Player of the Year, and NCBWA All-America voting. The NCBWA also sponsors preseason All-America awards, publication contests, and writing contests.
