Tennessee (60-13) tops final NCBWA Division I Poll

DALLAS (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association continues its tradition of NCAA Division I polls for the 27th year with its 2024 weekly surveys.

No. 1 Tennessee captured its first NCAA Baseball Championship this year after starting 2024 at No. 5 in the NCBWA polls while NCAA runnerup was preseason No. 10 Texas A&M. The Volunteers held down the top spot in NCBWA rankings from May 6-June 4 prior to Omaha while the Aggies were ranked No. 1 nationally for three weeks from April 15-29. UT also finished with the most victories by any Division I team nationally this year with 60 to set a Southeastern Conference season wins’ record and was No. 1 seed in NCAA Championship selections. A&M began NCAA activity as the No. 3 seed.

Tennessee also joined Miami (Florida) in 1999 as the only No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Championship to capture the crown since the tourney field was expanded to 64 teams in ’99.

Some of the big movers from June 4 to the final survey on Week 17 were Florida from No. 13 to 5, Florida State from No. 6 to 3, Virginia from No. 9 to 7, and NC State from No. 10 to 8, among others.

There were 12 conferences (eight in the final poll) represented in the 17 standings of 2024, and there were 15 different conferences in the 2023 NCBWA polls.

Wake Forest was the preseason No. 1 for in the 2024 surveys and followed previous pre-No. 1 selections LSU (1998, 2001, 2023), Southern California (1999), Miami (Fla.) (2000), Stanford (2002), Texas (2003, 06, 10, 22) Rice (2004, 07), Cal State Fullerton (2005, 14), Arizona State (2008), North Carolina (2009), TCU (2011, 17), Florida (2012, 18, 21), Arkansas (2013) and Vanderbilt (2015, 19, 20).

The NCBWA Division I Top 30 preseason poll will resume the rankings in February 2025.
