DALLAS (NCBWA) – Five homers, a one-hitter and a two-hitter captured the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Div. III honors for the week of February 24-March 2.
HITTER OF THE WEEK
Whitworth University (Washington) junior outfielder Caleb Gray slugged 1.642 while finishing 7-for-15 at the plate with five homers and 13 RBIs. During game two of a conference doubleheader with the University of Puget Sound, Gray connected on a grand slam and a three-run homer to finish with seven RBIs. The Spokane Valley, Wash. native homered twice in the opener of the series and logged multiple hits in every game of the weekend series. Gray was also selected to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week.
Honorable Mention Hitter: Ryan Vallie, So., 2B, Western Connecticut State University finished 8-for-8 at the plate in a doubleheader sweep. Vallie, the Little East Conference Player of the Week, was 5-for-5 in game one and 3-for-3 in game two. The East Haven, Conn. native doubled, tripled, scored four times and drove home five in the first game before driving home a pair while scoring three times in the second contest, finishing with seven runs and seven RBIs in the two contests.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK
Kalamazoo College (Michigan) hurler Jacob Davis set a program record by allowing just one-hit in a complete game 4-0 shutout. Davis, who held the previous record allowing just three hits last year, fanned 13 batters, tied for the second most in program history, while going the distance in the nine-inning victory. Davis was also named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week in addition to earning MIAA Player of the Week honors.
Honorable Mention Pitcher: Nolan Miller, So., Mount St. Joseph University (Ohio) – did not allow an earned run in a six-inning start. Miller allowed just two hits with a walk and 13 strikeouts.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Martin Luther College (Minnesota) starter Aidan Berg dominated in his first collegiate start, tossing a two-hit complete game in Kansas as part of a 5-0 win. Berg, the UMAC Pitcher of the Week, walked two and struck out three in the win.
