MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (NCBWA) – The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) released its Dick Howser Trophy National Player of the Week awards presented by The Game Headwear for the period ending March 26. Jacksonville graduate third baseman Kris Armstrong was named National Hitter of the Week, while Maryland freshman left-handed pitcher Kyle McCoy was named National Pitcher of the Week. The NCBWA Board reviews candidates from each Division I Conference and names winners each Tuesday throughout the season.
Armstrong had a monster week at the plate, finishing the five-game homestand with 15 hits, eight of them home runs and three. He drove in 24 runs, and recorded three multi-homer games. The highlight of his week came in back-to-back, three-home run performances on Saturday and Sunday vs. Central Arkansas. The Jupiter, Florida, native also set the program record for RBI in a game on Saturday with eight.
McCoy had a career day against UCF, throwing a career-high eight shutout innings while striking out a career-high nine batters, including two of the last three batters he faced. It was the Ringoes, New Jersey, native’s second-straight win on the bump for the Terps as he retired the first 14 batters he faced on Sunday.
