DALLAS (NCBWA) – Georgia outfielder Charlie Condon and Nicholls State right-hander Jacob Mayers have been named the 2023 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association National Freshman Hitter and Pitcher of the Year recipients, as announced by the organization today.
Condon, the 2023 SEC Freshman of the Year, was one of the semifinalists for the 36th Dick Howser Trophy, given to the year’s top collegiate player. The All-SEC second-team selection started all 56 games in 2023 and led the Bulldogs in batting average (.386), home runs (25), runs (61) and RBI (67). The outfielder had 81 hits, having at least one in 46 of the 56 games he played, while collecting 27 multi-hit hit contests. He also posted a .484 on base percentage and had an .800 slugging percentage. In addition, he had a 24-game hitting streak, the longest of any Bulldog in 2023, and 18 multi-RBI games, helping Georgia post a 29-27 record.
The Marietta, Georgia, native was named to the NCBWA Freshman All-America first team yesterday. Condon set the SEC freshman home run record with 25 and was selected Freshman All-SEC.
Condon was selected as a second team All-American and Freshman Hitter of the Year by the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper last week. Along with being a Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist, he was named a Golden Spikes Award semifinalist.
Mayers was named to the Southland All-Conference first team and the Southland Freshman of the Year in 2023. Also, a 2023 Southland All-Tournament team member, the right-hander posted a 9-1 record with a 2.02 ERA over 75 2/3 innings in 15 appearances, all starts. He struck out a Southland Conference-leading 105 and walked 58, allowing only 44 hits for a conference-leading .175 opponent batting average. He finished the year eighth nationally in ERA and is third in the country in hits allowed per nine innings (5.23).
Mayers helped Nicholls State appear in its fourth regional in program history in 2023. The Colonels posted a 34-24 overall record, winning the Southland regular season title for the first time in program history and capturing the Southland Tournament crown. The right-hander struck out a season-high 11 batters and recorded the win in Nicholls State’s victory over Louisiana Tech and closed out his freshman season, striking out eight in 5 2/3 innings, against Alabama to be named to the 2023 NCAA Tuscaloosa All-Regional team.
The Gonzalez, Louisiana, native was voted to the NCBWA Freshman All-American first team, yesterday and was a semifinalist for the College Baseball Foundation Pitcher of the Year. He also was selected as the Southland Pitcher of the Week for Feb. 27.
